I have a dilemma. OK, so I’m eighteen and over the past month or so I have become a lot more comfortable being myself. So far my attitude has improved drastically and. I’m becoming way more feminine. But within my self-improvement and becoming woman is where the problem lies. I truly adore the 1920’s - 1950’s pin-up girl era. Do not misinterpret this as me being shallow, talking about clothes etc. To me it’s so much more than clothes. It’s almost like a way of life. There is no other way that I can put it simply than by saying . . . think of it in terms of role models. I love Dita Von Teese. I love what she does and how she looks. The way she represents that era, the style, the attitude . . . she as a person inspires me. But I’m almost terrified that no one will accept me for it. Especially where I live, some people are going to say things like “first she wants to be the black rock chick and now she’s acting like Lucy ball or something.” I just need some advice to stay strong.

I understand exactly what you’re going through. Honestly, you shouldn’t worry what people will say or think. It’s your life, and you should live it how you want. No matter what you do, people will talk. As long as you’re true about yourself, and to yourself, you will comfortable w/ yourself, and won’t care what people will say or think about you. Just enjoy life…

Your at a pivotal age of transformation. 18 your either going to college or maybe not but you will find that your “high school” self is not going to be who you are anymore. Now some people stay the same and to be quite honest they are totally boring personalities. But you have shed that H/S personality and the control of parents and you are opening up to a new you. It’s great accept it and don’t worry about others.
Now the obivious your black and the era you love is not one that is to accepted by blacks…but you know what? that makes you even cooler going against the grain. You will find ppl and friends that like the same things as you but you will probably have to move from your old friends. But again that is natural, there is a middle line you can be who you want to be and still represent your race and be the deep down roots girl with the beautiful pinup package right? Don’t worry I think it’s great you know yourself this well at 18 I will still wondering at 20!!
